Hello, this week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question that Sanjib Ganguly three thousand and eighty four posted on our YouTube channel.

こんにちは、今週の「先生に質問」では、サンジブ・ガングリーが3084番目にYouTubeチャンネルに投稿した質問にお答えします。

Ma'am, which of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

お嬢さん、以下の文のうちどれが文法的に正しいですか?

It was last Saturday that we met him.

私たちが彼に会ったのは先土曜日でした。

It was last Saturday when we met him.

私たちが彼に会ったのは先土曜日のことです。

Thank you for writing, Sanjib.

サンジブ、書いてくれてありがとう。

This is a very good question.

これは非常に良い質問です。

We talked about relative pronouns in an earlier Everyday Grammar article.

私たちは以前の『日常の文法』記事で関係代名詞について話しました。

The article explains that relative pronouns help identify or give more information about a noun.

その記事は、関係代名詞が名詞を特定したり、より多くの情報を提供したりするのに役立つと説明しています。

English has many relative pronouns.

英語には多くの関係代名詞があります。

Most relative pronouns are the same as question words: who, which, whose, whom, where, when, and why.

ほとんどの関係代名詞は疑問詞と同じです:who, which, whose, whom, where, when, why。

That is also a relative pronoun.

thatもまた関係代名詞です。

Often there is more than one grammatically acceptable relative pronoun.

しばしば、文法的に許容される関係代名詞が一つ以上あります。

For example, we can say, "I have more friends who are boys."

例えば、「男の子の友人がもっといます」と言えます。

This is something which everyone knows.

これは誰もが知っていることです。

Or, "I have more friends that are boys."

あるいは、「男の子の友人がもっといます」と言えます。

This is something that everyone knows.

これは誰もが知っていることです。

All the sentences are grammatically correct.

すべての文は文法的に正しいです。

Usually, choosing the best pronoun depends on the usage.

通常、最適な代名詞の選択は用法によります。

In spoken English, we use that more often than other relative pronouns.

話し言葉の英語では、他の関係代名詞よりもthatをより頻繁に使います。

In academic written English, we use which more often than other relative pronouns.

学術的な書き言葉の英語では、他の関係代名詞よりもwhichをより頻繁に使います。

In news writing, we use which and who the most.

ニュース記事では、whichとwhoを最もよく使います。

Sanjeev, you asked about that.

サンジェーブ、あなたはそれについて尋ねました。

Or when?

それともwhenですか?

We do not use when as a relative pronoun very often.

weを関係代名詞として使うことはあまりありません。

We sometimes use when with expressions of time.

時を表す表現と一緒にsometimes whenを使うことがあります。

For example, there are a lot of times when we disagree.

例えば、意見が合わないことが多いです。

But more often we do not use a relative pronoun.

しかし、より頻繁に関係代名詞は使いません。

There are a lot of times we disagree.

意見が合わないことが多いです。

So, either of your sentences is grammatically correct, but most of the time in English, we would use that in your sentence, especially if it were spoken.

したがって、どちらの文も文法的に正しいですが、英語では通常、特に話し言葉の場合はyour sentenceでthatを使います。

We hope this explanation has helped you, Sanjeev.

この説明があなたのお役に立てたことを願っています、サンジェーブ。
