This is a good question.
これは良い質問です。
The short answer is yes, you can use young instead of younger, but using young instead of younger does change the meaning of the sentence, just a bit.
簡潔に言えば、はい、younger の代わりに young を使えますが、それを使うと文の意味が少し変わります。
Let's look at the differences between the two choices.
2 つの選択肢の違いを見てみましょう。
Young and younger are both adjectives.
young と younger はどちらも形容詞です。
Adjectives are words that describe nouns.
形容詞とは名詞を説明する言葉です。
Younger is a comparative adjective.
younger は比較級の形容詞です。
Comparative adjectives are used to compare two people or things.
比較級の形容詞は、2 人の人物や2つのものを比較するために使われます。
Comparative adjectives are easy to recognize because they often have an -er ending.
比較級の形容詞は、-er で終わることが多いため、見分けやすいです。
They are also often, but not always, followed by the conjunction than.
また、それらは常にではありませんが、接続詞 than に続くこともよくあります。
Let's look again at David's original example sentence.
デビッドさんの元の例文をもう一度見てみましょう。
My mother had a sweet singing voice when she was younger.
母は若い頃、甘い歌声を持っていました。
In this situation, younger is describing mother, but it is not so clear what is being compared.
この状況では、younger は母を説明していますが、何を比較しているのかは必ずしも明確ではありません。
That is because we sometimes leave out information from a sentence.
それは、文から情報を省略することがあるからです。
Even without the extra information, however, the listener or reader is still likely to understand the full thought or meaning.
しかし、追加の情報がない場合でも、聞き手や読み手は依然として文全体の考えや意味を理解する可能性が高いです。
As readers, we understand the full meaning of David's sentence to be, "My mother had a sweet singing voice when she was younger than she is now."
読者として、私たちはデビッドさんの文の意味を完全に理解し、『母は現在よりも若い頃、甘い歌声を持っていました』と捉えます。
We do not know how old the mother is now, but we know she had a sweet singing voice when she was younger than her current age.
母が現在何歳かはわかりませんが、彼女が現在の年齢より若い頃は甘い歌声を持っていたことはわかります。
Let's say for example that the writer's mother is sixty years old.
例えば、作家の母親が60歳だとしましょう。
The writer of the sentence could mean that his mother had a sweet singing voice when she was forty years old,
その文の作者は、母親が40歳の時に甘い歌声を持っていたと言いたいのかもしれません。
for example, or the writer could mean that his mother had a sweet singing voice when she was fifteen years old.
例えば、あるいは、母親が15歳の時に甘い歌声を持っていたと言いたいのかもしれません。
Both fifteen years old and forty years old are younger than sixty.
15歳も40歳も、60歳よりも若いです。
Now let's consider how the sentence's meaning might change if we were to use young instead of younger.
では、younger の代わりに young を使った場合に文の意味がどのように変わるか考えてみましょう。
The sentence would be, "My mother had a sweet singing voice when she was young."
文はこうなります、『母は若い頃、甘い歌声を持っていました』。
The meaning has changed just a bit.
意味は少しだけ変わりました。
Now it is clear that the writer means his mother had a sweet singing voice when she was a young person, or in her youth.
これで、作者が言いたいのは、母が若い人だった時、つまり若かった頃に甘い歌声を持っていたことが明確になります。
We hope this explanation has helped you, David.
この説明が役に立ったことを願っています、デビッドさん。
