Hello, this week on Ask a Teacher, we answer a question that Sanjib Ganguly three thousand and eighty four posted on our YouTube channel.

大家好,本週在「問老師」單元中,我們將回答桑吉布·甘古利(Sanjib Ganguly)於三萬零八十四號在我們 YouTube 頻道所提出的一個問題。

Ma'am, which of the following sentences is grammatically correct?

女士,下列哪一句句子在文法上是正確的?

It was last Saturday that we met him.

我們是在上個星期六遇見他的。

It was last Saturday when we met him.

我們是在上個星期六遇見他的。

Thank you for writing, Sanjib.

感謝您的來信,桑吉布。

This is a very good question.

這是一個非常好的問題。

We talked about relative pronouns in an earlier Everyday Grammar article.

我們在 earlier Everyday Grammar 文章中談論過關係代名詞。

The article explains that relative pronouns help identify or give more information about a noun.

該文章解釋說,關係代名詞有助於識別或提供更多關於名詞的資訊。

展開其餘 26 句

English has many relative pronouns.

英語中有許多關係代名詞。

Most relative pronouns are the same as question words: who, which, whose, whom, where, when, and why.

大多數關係代名詞與疑問詞相同:who、which、whose、whom、where、when 和 why。

That is also a relative pronoun.

that 也是一個關係代名詞。

Often there is more than one grammatically acceptable relative pronoun.

通常有多個在文法上都可接受的關係代名詞。

For example, we can say, "I have more friends who are boys."

例如,我們可以說:「我有更多是男孩的朋友。」

This is something which everyone knows.

這是人人都知道的一件事。

Or, "I have more friends that are boys."

或者,「我有更多是男孩的朋友。」

This is something that everyone knows.

這是人人都知道的一件事。

All the sentences are grammatically correct.

所有這些句子在文法上都是正確的。

Usually, choosing the best pronoun depends on the usage.

通常,選擇最恰當的代名詞取決於使用情境。

In spoken English, we use that more often than other relative pronouns.

在口語英語中,我們比使用其他關係代名詞更常使用 that。

In academic written English, we use which more often than other relative pronouns.

在學術書面英語中,我們比使用其他關係代名詞更常使用 which。

In news writing, we use which and who the most.

在新聞寫作中,我們最常使用 which 和 who。

Sanjeev, you asked about that.

桑吉夫,您問的就是那個。

Or when?

或者是 when?

We do not use when as a relative pronoun very often.

我們並不常將 when 用作關係代名詞。

We sometimes use when with expressions of time.

我們有時會將 when 用於時間表達中。

For example, there are a lot of times when we disagree.

例如,有很多時候我們會意見不合。

But more often we do not use a relative pronoun.

但較常見的情況是我們不使用關係代名詞。

There are a lot of times we disagree.

有很多時候我們會意見不合。

So, either of your sentences is grammatically correct, but most of the time in English, we would use that in your sentence, especially if it were spoken.

因此,您的兩個句子在文法上都是正確的,但在大多數情況下,英語中我們會使用 that,尤其是口語時。

We hope this explanation has helped you, Sanjeev.

希望這個解釋對您有所幫助,桑吉夫。
