Hello.

こんにちは。

This week on Ask a Teacher, we talk about how you can improve your vocabulary.

今週の「先生に質問」では、語彙力を向上させる方法についてお話しします。

Many VOA Learning English fans write to us with this question: What is the best way to improve my vocabulary?

VOA リーニング・イングリッシュの多くのファンから、この質問が届いています。「語彙力を向上させる最善の方法は何ですか?」

This is a good question, VOA fans.

これは素晴らしい質問ですね、VOA のファンの皆様。

Many learners think the best way to improve their vocabulary is to learn the definition of many words.

多くの学習者は、語彙力を向上させる最善の方法は、多くの単語の意味を覚えることだと考えています。

But this is not necessarily the best way to improve.

しかし、それが必ずしも最善の方法とは限りません。

The best way is to fully know a word.

最善の方法は、単語を完全に理解することです。

To know a word, we must know its form, meaning, and usage.

単語を理解するには、その形、意味、使い方を知らなければなりません。

Today, let's talk about the form of a word.

今日は、単語の形についてお話ししましょう。

In the coming weeks, we will talk about meaning and usage.

今後の数週間で、意味と使い方についてお話しします。

The form of a word can relate to how it sounds, is written, and what its parts are.

単語の形は、発音や書き方、そして構成要素に関係しています。

Knowing the sounds of a word includes recognizing it when it is spoken and being able to say it correctly.

単語の音を理解するには、発話されたときにそれを認識し、正しく発音できることが含まれます。

This includes the individual sounds and also how the sounds may change when people are saying the word quickly.

これには、個々の音だけでなく、人々が単語を速く話す際に音がどのように変化するかも含みます。

For example, it's nice to meet you.

例えば、「あなたにお会いできて光栄です」という表現があります。

When some people say this sentence at a natural speed, they might make a ch sound at the end of the word meet and the beginning of the word you, although the words' spellings do not suggest this.

自然な速度でこの文を発する際、一部の人は「meet」と「you」の間で「ch」のような音を出すことがありますが、スペルからはそのような変化は示されていません。

This sound change does not affect the meaning of the words, but it might cause you trouble when you are trying to understand the sentence.

このような音の変化は単語の意味には影響しませんが、文を理解しようとする際に混乱を招く可能性があります。

In English, stress is important to the sound of a word, and it can even decide whether a word is a noun or a verb.

英語では、アクセントは単語の発音にとって重要であり、名詞か動詞かを決定することさえあります。

For example, the word spelled R E C O R D can be thought of as two words.

例えば、R E C O R D と綴られる単語は、2 つの異なる単語として考えられます。

When we stress the first part of the word record, it is a noun.

record の最初の部分にアクセントを置くと、それは名詞になります。

When we stress the second part of the word record, it is a verb.

record の2番目の部分にアクセントを置くと、それは動詞になります。

What appears to be one word is really two parts of speech.

1 つの単語に見えるものは、実際には2つの品詞の組み合わせです。

This is part of knowing what form a word takes.

これは、単語がどのような形をとるかを理解することの一部です。

The form of a word also involves its parts.

単語の形には、その構成要素も含まれます。

It is important to recognize the root word in addition to prefixes or suffixes.

接頭辞や接尾辞に加えて、語根を認識することが重要です。

These are added beginnings or endings which change the meaning of the word's root.

これらは、単語の語根の意味を変えるために追加される始まりや終わりです。

For example, knowing that the word addition includes recognizing the verb to add plus the suffix tion, which suggests a state or an action.

例えば、addition という単語を理解するには、動詞 add に状態や動作を示す接尾辞 tion が付いたことを認識する必要があります。

Knowing the word untrue includes recognizing the base word true and the prefix un, which means not.

untrue という単語を理解するには、基本となる true と「~ではない」という意味を持つ接頭辞 un を認識する必要があります。

When we look at English words in this way, we can see that our vocabulary expands by understanding a word's form.

このように英語の単語を見ると、単語の形を理解することで語彙が広がることがわかります。

As we saw in the word record, the same word can work as two parts of speech.

record の例で見たとおり、同じ単語が2つの品詞として機能することがあります。

VOA fans, the best way to improve your vocabulary is to really know a word, its form, meaning and usage, not just a definition.

VOA のファンの皆様、語彙力を向上させる最善の方法は、定義だけでなく、単語の形、意味、使い方を本当に理解することです。
